What do the Fenua Original and Made In Fenua labels mean?

When you buy an object from Polynesia, you rarely buy just a product.

You are looking for an origin, a hand, a savoir-faire. You want to know whether the piece was truly created locally, whether it supports a local artisan, whether it carries something of the Fenua — a word that refers at once to the land, the country, and the bond with a place.

To give consumers clearer points of reference, several initiatives have been created. Among them, two names often come up: Fenua Original and Made In Fenua.

They do not refer to exactly the same thing, but they share one common purpose: to promote local creations and the know-how of the territory.

Fenua Original: recognizing traditional Polynesian craftsmanship

Fenua Original is a collective mark created to identify authentic products of traditional Polynesian craftsmanship.

It is registered by the Traditional Craftsmanship Department of French Polynesia, also known as Te Pū ‘ohipa rima’ī.

Its role is to distinguish local handmade creations from imported products or imitations. In French Polynesia, certain objects are strongly associated with the imagery of the islands: woven baskets, jewelry, objects made from natural fibers, sculptures, and traditional creations. Their popularity also attracts copies, sometimes sold as local souvenirs.

Fenua Original therefore helps identify traditional Polynesian creations and highlight the work of local artisans.

Made In Fenua: promoting local production

Made In Fenua refers more broadly to local Polynesian production.

Where Fenua Original focuses on traditional craftsmanship, Made In Fenua highlights locally made products in a broader sense: creators, producers, brands, businesses, objects, cosmetics, and food products developed in the territory.

The Made In Fenua fair, organized by the CCISM — the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Trades of French Polynesia — is an annual event that showcases the businesses, artisans, creators, and producers of the fenua.

Made In Fenua therefore promotes a broader local approach, beyond traditional craftsmanship alone.

What is the difference between Fenua Original and Made In Fenua?

Both initiatives promote local products, but they do not cover the same scope.

Fenua Original focuses on the authenticity of traditional Polynesian craftsmanship.

Made In Fenua more broadly highlights products, creations, brands, and businesses connected to local production.

In simple terms, Fenua Original helps identify a traditional handmade creation, while Made In Fenua promotes locally made products in a wider sense.

In both cases, these points of reference allow you to buy more consciously, better understand the origin of an object, and support the people and businesses of the fenua.

At Ū Matatea, we highlight creations from the fenua, chosen for their origin, the way they are made, and their connection to local know-how. All our products are part of the Fenua Original label and/or the Made In Fenua approach.
